Luca Brecel Stuns with Greatest-Ever Crucible Comeback to Reach World Championship Final
Belgian snooker player, Luca Brecel, has achieved a remarkable turnaround to make it to the final of the World Championship held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. Brecel’s feat is considered as the most outstanding comeback ever seen in the tournament’s history, as he won an impressive 11 frames in a row to secure a 17-15 victory over Si Jiahui.
Brecel appeared to have no chance of winning the match as he lagged behind by a substantial margin of 14-5. Nevertheless, the determined 28-year-old did not throw in the towel and made a comeback on Saturday by making breaks of 70, 81, and 73, ultimately completing an astonishing turnaround.
Brecel, who had failed to win a single match in his past five trips to Sheffield, was clearly moved after the match. He conveyed his astonishment at his victory after being so far behind, stating that “I never believed winning from 14-5 was achievable. It’s unbelievable.” Brecel was proud of the quality of his play during his comeback, which was marked “excellent,” and he credited his improved mental strength as a key factor in his recent success.
Brecel will now face either four-time world champion Mark Selby in the final. Selby leads Allen 11-10 in the other semi-final.
The loss was a heartbreaking experience for Si Jiahui, the 20-year-old newcomer from China. Si put up a noteworthy performance in the initial two sessions and seemed to be on track to become the youngest-ever finalist at the Crucible. However, Brecel’s scoring was unstoppable, and he scored 916 points to Si’s 179 from the 20th to the 30th frames of the match.
Speaking to BBC, Si Jiahui expressed his disappointment about the defeat but also acknowledged Brecel’s outstanding performance, stating, “I am not overly disappointed. He played almost flawlessly in the last two sessions.” Si’s impressive journey to the semi-finals, during which he rose from 80th to 36th in the world rankings, garnered admiration for his fearlessness in attacking and his ability to remain calm under pressure.
Brecel’s stunning comeback has set up a tantalizing final at the Crucible. Snooker fans around the world will be eagerly anticipating the final match as Brecel looks to secure a World Championship title.
