Snooker Legend Shocks Fans with Sudden Retirement Ahead of World Championship
# Snooker Star Joe Perry Announces Retirement Ahead of World Championship
Former Welsh Open champion Joe Perry has confirmed he will retire from professional snooker after this year’s World Championship. The 50-year-old, who reached the Masters final in 2017, is currently competing in qualifying matches for one last shot at the Crucible Theatre.
Perry secured a second-round qualifying victory over Dylan Emery on Thursday and needs two more wins to reach the main draw. Regardless of the outcome, he plans to step away from the professional tour while continuing to participate in World Seniors events.
“I have officially retired,” Perry told World Snooker Tour. “My time as a professional snooker player is up after this tournament. I was less nervous today than in recent years because there’s less at stake now. I’m just trying to enjoy these final matches.”
The Wisbech native admitted struggling with his form but remains determined to potentially end his career at the iconic Crucible venue. “I would love to play my last ever game at the Crucible, but it’s going to be tough. The standard is so high these days,” Perry said.
After turning professional in 1992, Perry won two ranking titles – the 2015 Players Championship and 2022 Welsh Open. His career highlight came in 2017 when he reached the Masters final, ultimately losing to Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Perry revealed his retirement decision followed 12-18 months of consideration: “I decided midway through this season that enough was enough. I wish I’d come to this decision sooner because I’ve not enjoyed this season.”
