Belgian Luca Brecel Knocks out Ronnie O’Sullivan at World Snooker Championship

In a stunning upset at the 2023 World Snooker Championship, Belgian player Luca Brecel knocked out seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in the quarter-finals at the Crucible Theatre. Brecel’s victory came after he revealed his unconventional preparation for the tournament, which involved partying with friends until the early hours of the morning.

Brecel, who has been known for his mercurial talent, put on a remarkable performance, winning seven frames in a row against the favorite O’Sullivan, who was aiming for an unprecedented eighth world title in the modern era. Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, Brecel credited his unorthodox preparation for his success.

Brecel’s victory was particularly impressive when you consider the pedigree of his rival, O’Sullivan, one of the best snooker players ever. Despite this, the 28-year-old Belgian met the challenge with arguably his best-ever performance, resulting in a spectacular victory.

Speaking after his triumph, Brecel admitted that his preparation for the tournament had been far from conventional.  “I was out having fun, playing Fifa with pals until sunrise and not honing my skills,” he disclosed. “I returned home by car at 7am after beating Mark Williams [in the second round], and the following day I drove back up still under the influence of alcohol. This peculiar way of preparation appears to be working for me.”

In defeat, O’Sullivan praised Brecel for his amazing display, expressing his admiration for the latter’s talent. “His play was incredible; I thoroughly enjoy watching him,” he declared. “His ability is unmatched, easily the most talented I’ve seen. I sincerely hope he goes on to win it; it would be great for snooker.”

The 2023 World Snooker Championship has been a thrilling event so far, with several surprise results and standout performances. Brecel’s victory has set up a semi-final clash with Si Jiahui, who beat Anthony McGill 13-12 last night. He hopes to continue his impressive form and clinch the world championship title.
